A Practical Checklist Before Exchanging Money

A practical checklist for comparing currency offers, total fees, payment methods, and final payout before exchanging money.

A practical checklist for comparing currency offers, total fees, payment methods, and final payout before exchanging money.

Start with the amount you need at the destination

Decide whether you need to know how much local currency you will receive or how much source currency you must pay. These are different questions when the provider has separate buy and sell rates. Enter the same amount and direction when comparing options.

Ask for the net amount

A quote should make clear the exchange rate, any fixed fee, any percentage fee, and the amount the recipient or customer will receive. Do not compare providers using a headline rate alone. A seemingly better rate can become worse after fees or minimum charges.

Check limits and timing

Confirm minimum and maximum transaction sizes, expected settlement time, opening hours if visiting a branch, and how long a quoted price remains valid. If you use a P2P platform, read the advertiser’s instructions, allowed payment method, completion record shown by the platform, and order limits before starting.

Protect your payment

Use official channels and follow the provider’s verification steps. Do not share passwords or one-time codes. For P2P transactions, keep communication and proof of payment within the platform’s permitted process, and do not release an asset before the payment is confirmed according to platform rules.

Keep the quote and receipt

Save the amount, rate, fee, time, provider, and final amount received. These details make it easier to compare the next transaction and address a discrepancy. For a larger transaction, confirm the details in writing before authorizing it.

How Rateya can help

Use the converter for a quick reference amount and the fee-and-spread calculator to compare a provider’s offered rate with a reference rate. For SDG, read the source label carefully: the site may show a multi-ad Binance P2P reference, a manual override, or a general currency-feed fallback. These values are helpful benchmarks, not guarantees.

Important reminder

This guide is for information and calculation only. Confirm final rates and terms directly with the relevant provider or platform.
