Understand reference rates, cross-rates, buy and sell quotes, and why the amount received can differ from a displayed conversion.
A reference rate is a comparison point
An exchange rate expresses how much of one currency corresponds to a unit of another. A reference feed can be useful for estimates and comparisons, but a bank, card issuer, exchange office, or remittance provider may give a customer a different price. The reference value should therefore be treated as a point of comparison, not a promise that the same price is available for a transaction.
What is a cross-rate?
Rateya receives a currency table expressed relative to USD. To estimate currency A into currency B, it divides B’s value relative to USD by A’s value relative to USD, then multiplies the result by the entered amount. For example, if one source unit corresponds to 1.2 USD-based table units and one target unit corresponds to 30 units, the cross-rate is 30 ÷ 1.2 = 25 target units per source unit. This illustration explains the calculation only; it is not a live quote.
Buy and sell prices are not always equal
A provider can quote one rate when it buys a currency from you and another when it sells it to you. The difference is often called a spread. The spread may compensate the provider for costs, risk, and operating margin. A consumer should compare the price for the exact direction of the intended transaction.
Fees change the effective rate
A fixed fee can have a much larger effect on a small transfer than a large one. A provider may advertise a low fee while embedding more of its cost in the exchange rate. To compare fairly, calculate the net amount received after converting the money and subtracting all fees. Rateya’s fee calculator helps show that difference.
Timing, availability, and transaction size
Reference rates can update at different times. A displayed quote may not be available after the market changes, and a P2P ad may only accept amounts within its minimum and maximum limits. Payment methods, local rules, liquidity, and provider-specific conditions may also influence the final result.
A practical comparison checklist
Use the same source amount and target currency when comparing providers. Confirm the direction (buy or sell), ask whether fees are included, check the expiry of the quoted rate, compare the final amount to be paid or received, and save the quote or receipt. For high-value transactions, confirm all details directly with the regulated provider you intend to use.
